Building Your First Solo Budget After Two Incomes
A budget built for one income after years of two is a different animal. This is a gentle starting framework, realistic instead of restrictive, and easy to adjust as things settle.
Start with what is true right now
Write down this month's income, not the number you hope for after support gets sorted. A budget built on real numbers holds, and one built on hopeful numbers breaks in week three.
The three-line version
- Must pay: housing, utilities, food, insurance, minimum debt payments.
- Kids first: school costs, activities, the things that keep their world consistent.
- Everything else: whatever remains, split however this month needs.
Expect it to be wrong at first
Your first solo budget is a draft. Groceries for a changed household, gas for a new exchange schedule, none of it is knowable until you live it. Adjust monthly without judgment, because the adjusting is the skill.
